Defenders Fall Hard 9-2
July 13, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders dug an early hole they could not climb out of as they fell for the second straight time to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 9-2.
The Cats pounced on the Defs in the first as David Smith launched a three-run jack over the left field wall. Two batters later, Jacob Butler took flight with a solo blast to make it 4-0 New Hampshire.
A silent second and third led to a noise fourth. Travis Snider roped a two-out two-run single to right. Eric Nielsen laced a single of his own to plate another as the lead grew to 7-0.
One run in the seventh and one in the eighth pushed the advantage to an insurmountable nine runs.
Meanwhile, Fisher Cats' starter Ricky Romero was lights out. Olmo Rosario's double in the sixth was the first hit and fourth base runner allowed and Romero cruised.
Romero attempted to go the distance but faltered in the ninth as Ryan Rohlinger tripled Ben Copeland home and Eddy Martinez-Esteve bounced an infield single up the middle to plate Rohlinger from third.
When the final out was recorded, the Defs suffered a 9-2 beat down. Romero earned his fifth win and Defenders' starter Ben Snyder lost his second loss at the Double-A level.
Connecticut and New Hampshire will tangle on Monday evening at 6:35pm at the Dodd. Tickets are available for the final game of the series and the final game before the All-Star break at www.ctdefenders.com or by calling the ticket office (860) 887-7962.
