Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Arkansas Travelers tallied four runs in the sixth inning, coming from behind to defeat the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 11-6 on Sunday afternoon at Hammons Field.

Greg Porter tied the game with a two-run triple to right-center field and then scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, as the Travs took game two of the current home stand, snapping a three-game skid.

The teams went back and forth for the first several innings, trading runs in the first. Arkansas took a 1-0 lead when Freddy Sandoval homered into the Arkansas bullpen beyond the left field wall, his second of the year. Springfield got a Colby Rasmus RBI double to score Tyler Greene, tying the game at 1-1 after one inning.

Arkansas got a two-run homer to center field by Curtis Pride in the fourth, as they took a 3-1 lead.

Springfield scored three times in the bottom of the fourth though, taking their first lead at 4-3. Juan Lucena's two-run single tied it at 3-3 against Arkansas starter Fernando Rodriguez. Lucena scored the go-ahead run, as Tyler Greene's RBI groundout made it 4-3.

The Travs scored four in the sixth against Matt Scherer (1-3) and then four more in the eighth to put it away against reliever Nick Webber, who was just called up from Palm Beach.

Springfield got four hits from Sean Danielson, who finished the day 4-4, becoming just the second Cardinal this year with a four-hit game. Danielson doubled with two outs in the eighth, then capped the scoring by plating on a Mike McCoy RBI single, making it 11-6.

Springfield starter Jose Garcia pitched well in his first start, making a spot-start out of the bullpen. Garcia allowed three runs on five hits over five innings, leaving with a 5-3 lead.

Arkansas reliever Rich Thompson (1-0) got the win in relief, allowing one run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals fall to 11-15 with the loss, now two games out of first place. Springfield looks to get back on track on Monday night, as Mitchell Boggs (1-2) goes to the mound against Arkansas right-hander Nick Green (2-1). Game time on Monday night is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm. Tuesday's game will be a special start time of 12:10pm, as the Travs and Cards finish their four-game series on Tuesday afternoon.
