Hammons Field, Springfield, MO - The Arkansas Travelers (12-17) set season highs in runs and base hits in an 11-6 victory over the Springfield Cardinals (11-15). In breaking a three-game losing streak, the Travs collected 16 base hits with SS Sean Rodriguez and C Tim Duff each getting three hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Duff knocked in the winning run with a sixth-inning RBI single to drive in RF Greg Porter who had tripled in two runs to tie the game. Porter finished 2-for-5 as did DH Adam Morrissey who also knocked in two runs. 3B Freddy Sandoval also hit a home run (2) and had two base hits. RHP Rich Thompson (1-0) earned the win in relief with 2.2 inning pitched and one run allowed. Springfield RHP Matt Scherer (1-3) was the loser in relief allowing four runs (three earned) in 0.2 innings.
The clubs exchanged runs in the first inning, the Travs getting Sandoval's solo home run and the Cardinals on an RBI double from Coldy Rasmus, who finished 3-for-5 with two doubles.
In the top of the fourth, Rodriguez legged out an infield single and Pride followed with a two-run homer to straight-away center field giving the Travs a 3-1 lead.
Arkansas RHP Fernando Rodriguez, in his Class AA debut, tired in the fourth inning allowing three runs on four hits and a walk. C Bryan Anderson hit a leadoff single and Jarrett Hoffpauir doubled him to third base. After an out, Juan Lucena grounded a single to center bringing home two runs to tie the game. Then the Cardinals loaded the bases on a single by Sean Danielson and a walk to Mike McCoy before Rodriguez exited in favor of Thompson. The Cards managed one run out of their bases-loaded chance on a groundout by SS Tyler Greene to take a 4-3 lead.
Thompson returned for the fifth inning and Anderson stroked a one-out single followed by a walk to Hoffpauir. The Cards got another bases-loaded shot when Lucena hit a hard grounder past second base that 2B Ryan Leahy stopped for an infield hit. Then Danielson, who finished 4-for-4, lined a single to right field to score Anderson from third base. Hoffpauir also rounded third, but Porter fired a one-hop throw to the plate and Duff absorbed a blow from Hoffpauir but held on for the third out.
With Springfield leading 5-3, the Cards replaced starter RHP Jose Garcia with Scherer in the sixth. After a diving play by Greene to rob Morrissey of a single, Sandoval lined a single to right field and stole second base. Rodriguez followed with a slow roller to third for his second infield hit while Sandoval advanced to third. Following the second out, Porter fell behind 1-2 and yanked a triple to right-center plating two runs to tie the score, at 5-5. Duff followed with the game-winning hit, a single to center to score Porter. Travs LF Matt Pali chased Scherer with a single moving Duff to third. RHP Michael Cooper relieved and induced Michael Cooper to bounce to short, but Greene bobbled the ball for an error that allowed Duff to score giving the Travs a 7-5 lead.
Thompson tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and RHP Aaron Pullin pitched around a walk for a scoreless seventh inning.
The Travs put the game away in the eighth inning against RHP Nick Webber bringing home four more runs. Duff began the inning with another infield single then Webber hit Pali with a pitch. Collins followed with a sacrifice bunt that Webber threw past third base for an error that scored a run and put runners at second and third. With one out, Morrissey grounded a two-run single to center and moved to second base when Rasmus overran the ball for the Cards' fourth error. Morrissey scored when Rodriguez lined a single to right putting the Travelers in front 11-5.
Springfield scored the game's last run, off RHP Kevin Lynch in the eighth inning. Lynch returned for a shutout ninth inning to end the game.
Time of game was 3:00 and the paid attendance was 6,286.
