Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Josh Geer tossed seven innings of one-run ball and Tim Brown went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's in San Antonio's 10-3 romp over Corpus Christi before 7,514 fans Sunday afternoon at Whataburger Field.
The Hooks, losers of seven straight, allowed thirteen hits and walked seven while dropping to 8-22. The Missions are 18-12.
Corpus Christi starter Ronnie Martinez (1-3) struggled with his command, falling behind nine of the first ten batters he faced. The righty allowed six runs and 10 hits in four-plus innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Geer (5-1) surrendered just two hits to earn the victory.
San Antonio took 1-0 lead in the first. Drew Macias led off with a double to right-center. Peter Ciofrone followed with a single and Chase Headley lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Macias. The Missions added a single and walk to load the bases, but Martinez escaped the jam with a fly out and strikeout.
Todd Self tied the game for Corpus Christi in the fourth with a solo homer, his fourth long ball of the season. Self's blast hit the top of the fence in left field.
San Antonio broke things open in the fifth by scoring six times. RBI doubles by Headley and Brown accounted for three runs before Juan Ciriaco connected on his first home run of the season - a three-run shot -- for a 7-1 cushion.
In the sixth, Hooks reliever Evan Englebrook walked three straight batters to open the inning. Brown and Will Venable followed with run-scoring singles to right off new hurler Brian Gordon, pushing San Antonio's lead to nine.
Englebrook was tagged with four runs and three walks in 2/3 of an inning. Gordon, making his Whataburger Field debut, surrendered only two hits over 2-plus innings of work. Kyle Middleton threw 1 2/3 scoreless frames after being activated a few hours before the game.
Reliever Robert Stiehl was released to make room for Middleton.
Corpus Christi mounted a two-out uprising in the eighth. Noochie Varner doubled to left field, driving in Jonny Ash and Todd Self.
The Hooks and Missions are back in action tomorrow at Whataburger Field in a 7:05 contest. Astros reliever Rick White (0-0, 0.00) makes his second rehab start for Corpus Christi against San Antonio's Mike Ekstrom (1-2, 5.32).
