Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Arkansas Travelers got out to an early lead, then added some late insurance, taking the opening game of a three-game series, defeating the Springfield Cardinals by a score of 7-2, on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.

Travs' starter Alex Torres (1-0) won in his Texas League debut, keeping the Cards' offense off-balance, limiting them to just two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Springfield starter Brandon Dickson, coming off eight shut-out innings against the Travs in his last outing, allowed three second-inning runs, but settled down over a seven-inning performance.

The Travs got to Dickson early, as Chris Gutierrez ripped a two-run triple down the right-field line, then scored on a ground-rule double by Brian Walker, putting Arkansas in front 3-0.

The Redbirds got a pair of runs to close the gap in the third, as Aaron Luna doubled home Pete Kozma in his first Double-A at-bat, making it 3-1. Luna would later score on a wild pitch, bringing the Cards to within a run at 3-2. Jim Rapoport was thrown out at the plate to end the third, trying to score on a would-be sacrifice fly off the bat of Steven Hill. Right fielder Nate Sutton threw a one-hop strike to the plate, as Rapoport was tagged out to end the threat and keep Springfield down by a run.

While Dickson (7-7) went on to throw a quality start, allowing just three runs over seven innings, he got no more run support.

Relievers Casey Mulligan and Chuckie Fick allowed three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, respectively, as the Travs built a 7-2 advantage. Brian Walker's two-run single capped a three-run eighth against Mulligan, while Fick surrendered a solo shot to Coby Smith in the ninth to round out the scoring.

The Cards (17-20, 55-52) take on the Travs in game two of the series on Wednesday night, sending Ryan Kulik (4-7) to the mound against Travs' right-hander Tim Kiely (3-1). Wednesday is Missouri Lottery Scratcher Night, as 1,000 fans will receive a Missouri Lottery Scratcher ticket. Game time is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
