Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Drew Meyer hammered a three-run home run in the first and finished with five RBI's to lead the Hooks to an 8-3 win over the Missions in the opener of this three-game series at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Corpus Christi improves to 18-20 in the second half to remain three games behind first-place Midland in the Texas League South.
The Hooks got off to a fast start, scoring four times in the first off Missions' hurler Corey Kluber (1-1). Darin Erstad, beginning a rehab assignment with the Hooks, got the rally started with a double off the wall in the left-field corner. Kluber walked Drew Locke and Jason Castro to load the bases for Mark Ori, whose sacrifice fly to deep center plated Erstad with the game's first run.
Meyer, customarily the two-hole hitter, was moved to sixth in the lineup to accommodate Erstad. He mashed the first pitch from Kluber high off the back wall in right for his fifth homer of the year and a 4-0 Hooks lead.
Meyer added a fielder's choice RBI in the third and a two-out, RBI single to center in the seventh. He became the third Hook this season to knock in as many as five runs in a game, joining Ori and Locke.
Corpus Christi's second baseman also turned in some top-notch plays in the field, going to his right in both the first and second to take base hits away from San Antonio's speedy leadoff hitter Luis Durango. Meyer fittingly ended the game, retiring Mitch Canham on a grounder with the bases loaded.
Sergio Perez (8-9) allowed three runs on six hits over five innings to get the win. He walked two and struck out four and became the eighth pitcher in Hooks history to amass 10 career wins for the franchise.
Danny Meszaros and Charlie Weatherby combined for four frames of shutout relief.
The Hooks have won five of six against the Missions this half and improved to 4-5 this season at Wolff Municipal.
Wednesday's 7:05 tilt features a battle of southpaws, as Corpus Christi's Andy Van Hekken (5-4, 4.58) takes on San Antonio's Nathan Culp (5-6, 3.98).
