FRISCO, TEXAS - The Travs (1-3) made their three base hits count on Sunday afternoon and picked up their first victory of the year, 4-1 over the Frisco RoughRiders (2-2). Second baseman Ryan Mount hit the club's first home run (1) of the season. Shortstop Andrew Romine scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Paul McAnulty to give the Travs the lead. Later in the game Romine added an RBI double. Right fielder Julio Perez collected their last base hit, a sixth-inning double which figured into the final run of the game.
Travs pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters with starter Michael Anton (1-0) collecting eight Riders whiffs over five effective frames to earn the win. Anton gave up six hits and walked two, but just one run leaving seven runners. Taylor Wilding added one scoreless frame with one strikeout, but needed help from right hander Ryan Aldridge to get out of a jam in the seventh. Aldridge punched out four in two innings and stranded three runners as Frisco threatened in the seventh. Righty Mike Kohn tossed a scoreless ninth with one strikeout to earn the save (1).
Frisco started left hander Kasey Kiker (L, 0-1), who held the Travs to one run over three starts covering 19 innings during the 2009 season. He got into immediate trouble by walking Romine and Mount to begin the first inning. An uncontested double steal led to McAnulty's sacrifice fly giving the Travs a 1-0 lead.
Mount whacked a solo home run with one out in the third inning on the first pitch he saw for a 2-0 Travs lead. It was the first home run allowed to a left-handed hitter by Kiker since the 2008 season, and it ended a streak of eight consecutive outs for Kiker.
The first two batters of the third inning for Frisco succumbed to strikes against Anton. He then allowed a single and a walk, but ended the inning with a strikeout of cleanup batter Wes Bankston.
Kiker had retired six in a row after Mount's long ball when hit plunked Travs catcher Brian Walker with two outs in the fifth inning. On the next pitch Walker stole second base without a throw and scored when Romine lined a double to the left-field corner stretching the Travs' lead to 3-0.
After leaving six runners on base in four innings, Frisco finally scored when right fielder Joey Butler went deep to center field (1) cutting the Travs' lead to 3-1. But they got the run right back in the sixth against Riders reliever Ryan Tatusko taking advantage of a leadoff walk to McAnulty, Perez's double and a walk to Jeremy Moore to load the bases with no outs. They managed just one run when left fielder Carlos Colmenares grounded to shortstop and stayed out a double play beating the relay throw to first base. Perez was caught stealing home plate on a busted double steal, and Colmenares was picked off second base by Frisco catcher Kevin Richardson.
Frisco's last gasp came in the seventh inning as Taylor Wilding walked two batters with no outs. Aldridge was summoned from the pen, and he promptly hit Butler to load the bases. Aldridge rebounded by inducing Bankston to foul out, then he struck out John Whittleman and Kevin Richardson to quell the Riders.
Aldridge continued with a shutout eighth before giving way to Kohn for a perfect ninth. All in all, the Travs relief corps combined to retire the final nine Frisco batters.
Time of game was 2:26 and the paid attendance was 10,104 on a beautiful afternoon at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Travs have right hander Ryan Brasier (7-5, 5.27 ERA between Rancho Cucamonga & Arkansas in 2009) while Frisco counters with 19-year old left hander Martin Perez (6-8, 2.90 ERA between Hickory and Frisco in 2009) Listen to the Travs broadcast on Sports Animal 920 AM with the Coca-Cola Pre Game Show beginning at 6:40 p.m.
