Midland, TX - For the first time in 2010, the Cardinals jumped out to an early lead against Midland on Sunday afternoon. In the 4th inning, Steven Hill and Andrew Brown drew back to back walks before Daryl Jones hammered and RBI double to center to score Hill and Charlie Cutler followed with and RBI sacrifice fly to score Brown to grab a 2-0 lead.

Cardinals' starter Scott Gorgen cruised through the first three innings before allowing a run in the 4th as former Cardinals farm-hand Shane Peterson doubled off the left center field fence to drive in a run and bring Midland within a run, 2-1.

Gorgen lasted five innings allowing just the one run on five hits while striking out four in his 2010 debut.

The Cards added a run in the top of the 6th inning as Curt Smith singled to center, Daryl Jones drew a walk and Aaron Luna collected an RBI single to score Smith and give Springfield a 3-1 lead.

The bullpen of Blake King, Matt Meyer, Adam Reifer and Eduardo Sanchez combined to throw four shut out innings allowing just one hit. Sanchez walked one in the 9th, but induced a double play to end the game.

Springfield will continue their series Monday in Midland and will send right hander David Kopp to the mound against left hander Ben Hornbeck for the RockHounds. Game time is scheduled for 6:30pm central time.

Springfield will open the 2010 home schedule next Thursday, April 15th, as they take on the Frisco RoughRiders at Hammons Field. 5,000 fans will receive a Great Southern 2010 Magnet Schedule, the first of 11 "Buck a Brat" $1 Johnson Bratwurst nights and everyone will enjoy a post-game Fireworks Spectacular thanks to AM Pyrotechnics. Opening Night will also feature Hall of Fame inductee Whitey Herzog.
