Arkansas Travelers News Release

Michael Anton starred on Thursday night leading the Arkansas Travelers to a 4-0 shutout over the Springfield Cardinals at Dickey-Stephens Park. Combining with Ismael Carmona for a three-hitter, Anton (5-7) didn't allow a base hit until the fifth inning and only gave up two hits over 7.1 innings. The Travs scored twice in the first inning on a pair of two-out RBI singles from Charlton Jimerson and Jeremy Moore. Nick Gorneault hit three singles and ran around the bases on a single and two errors in the sixth inning.

After dropping two of three to Springfield, the Travs head into a four-game series with Tulsa with a 13-20 second half record (38-64 overall). Springfield returns home for a set with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at 16-16 in the second half (54-48 overall).

Anton twice had been defeated by the Cardinals, but on Thursday he showed early dominance by striking out Matt Carpenter and Andrew Brown. Anton registered seven strikeouts, but walked three and hit two batters. He also caught two runners stealing on pickoffs.

Arquimedes Nieto (0-2) got into early trouble in his second class-AA start as Tyson Auer bounced a double over Carpenter's head at third base to begin the first inning. After moving to third on a sacrifice by Andrew Romine, Auer scored when Jimerson placed a two-out single to right. Moore came to bat and Jimerson stole second base on the next pitch before a hard single to right field gave the Travs a 2-0 lead.

Anton followed a walk in the third with five more outs in a row before Tommy Pham hit a high chopper deep into the hole at shortstop for the Cards' first hit. Before facing Tony Cruz though, Anton picked off Pham as he tried to steal second base. He hit Cruz and struck out Jose Garcia to end the frame.

Gorneault has base hits in seven of eight game since joining the club, on Thursday he rounded the bases in the sixth inning on one of the most interesting plays of the season. With one out and Nieto still on the mound, Gorneault laced a line drive single to left field. Pham attempted to play the ball on a bounce, but it hopped over his shoulder allowing Gorneault to attempt to advance to third base. Pham recovered and fired towards the infield where second baseman Jose Garcia caught the ball then flipped it wildly away from third base. Gorneault sprinted to the plate giving the Travs a 3-0 lead.

Anton handed the lead over to Carmona with one out in the eighth after allowing a walk a single. He needed just one pitch to get Daryl Jones to bounce to Alexi Amarista starting a double play.

Carmona dropped the Cards in the ninth inning for his fifth save allowing just a two-out single to Brown in the ninth inning.

Time of game was 2:36 and the paid attendance was 4,517.

The Tulsa Drillers now come to Dickey-Stephens Park for a four-game series beginning on Friday at 7:10 p.m. Right hander Ryan Brasier (5-8, 5.74) makes the start for the Travs while the Drillers counter with left hander Keith Weiser (7-6, 4.33).
