Travelers outlast Express
June 7, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
Consider Friday's game between the Round Rock Express and the Arkansas Travelers the baseball version of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. It was very long, at times tedious and didn't have a happy ending.
The Travelers got an RBI single from Casey Smith in the top of the fifteenth inning to beat the Express, 3-1, in front of 10,307 at The Dell Diamond. It was the longest game in the history of stadium, eclipsing the previous record of 13.
The majority of the crowd that stayed for the game saw a remarkable pitcher's duel. A combined 12 pitchers shut each other down to the tune of one run each for 14 innings, at least until Smith finally broke the seal in the fifteenth. A wild pitch scored their final run.
The Express did not go quietly into the night, though. An error in the bottom of the inning brought home a run, but Scott Schneider struck out John Tamargo to end the game, 4:35 after it began.
Greg Powell had his best start of the year, going six innings and allowing only one run.
Cheyenne Janke (0-1) was the loser and Schneider (1-0) was the winner.
NOTES Eric Cammake was activated and Jory Coughenour was sent to Class A Salem.
