Edwards Guzman Selected by Montreal

EDMONTON, AB - The Montreal Expos announced today that catcher/infielder Edwards Guzman has been selected from Triple-A Edmonton's roster. Guzman is the third player to be promoted to Montreal from Edmonton in the last three games. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 21 players, nine pitchers, two catchers, five infielders and five outfielders, plus two players (right-handed pitcher Britt Reames and right-handed pitcher Troy Mattes) on the disabled list.

Guzman, 26, batted .352 (75-for-213) with three home runs, 27 RBI and five stolen bases in 55 games with the Trappers this season. He was on an 11-game hitting at the time of his promotion, during which he was batting .455 (20-for-44) with four RBI. Guzman is currently fourth in the Pacific Coast League with a .352 batting average and is third in the league with 75 hits. He was acquired from the San Francisco Giants along with right-handed pitcher Livan Hernandez and cash considerations in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jim Brower and a player to be named later (left-handed pitcher Matt Blank) on March 24, 2003. Guzman spent the entire 2002 season with Triple-A Fresno, where he batted .297 (116-for-390) with five home runs, 55 RBI and one stolen base in 112 games. The native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico was originally selected by the Giants in the 50th round of the 1995 draft. He began the 2003 season with a career minor league batting average of .287 (664-for-2313) with 31 home runs, 296 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 661 games. In 75 Major League games with San Francisco in 1999 and 2001, Guzman batted .215 (28-for-130) with three home runs and seven RBI.

The next Trapper home game will be on Friday, June 13 when the club will take on the Sacramento River Cats. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
