Montreal Alouettes News Release
Montreal, June 2, 2013 - No less than 84 players hit Coulter Field at Bishop's University early Sunday morning for the opening day of the Alouettes' 2013 training camp.
It was Head Coach Dan Hawkins' first practice at the Alouettes' helm and the first-year coach liked what he saw from his squad. "We'll have a lot of difficult decisions to make. We have a team with a solid culture as well as plenty of depth and skill at every position, which is a good problem to have" explained Hawkins after practice.
Returning running back Brandon Whitaker, who signed a new contract last Thursday, took reps with the first offensive unit, picking up from where he had left off last fall before suffering a season-ending knee injury.
Non-import running back Jerome Messam also impressed on Day 1, outrunning the entire defence on an 80-yard rushing play before bolting for the end zone. He also delivered a solid block on Winston Venable.
Receiver Wallace Wright meanwhile frustrated Alouettes defensive backs throughout the morning with a collection of impressive catches.
Tryout camps that paid off
The series of tryout camps organized by the Alouettes football operations staff throughout the off-season, including the one held in Montreal a week ago today, have paid off for no less than five players discovered at these camps were on the team's roster for the opening day of training camp.
Mathieu Boulay, defensive line, Bishop's
Brandon Denson, defensive end, Michigan State
Tanner Marsh, quarterback, Arkansas Tech
D.L. Moore, receiver, South Carolina
Michael Parker, defensive back, Richmond
Guest coaches
The Alouettes have invited four guest coaches to both help out and learn from the coaching staff all during training camp. They are Ross Cammallerri (Les Phenix du College Andre-Grasset), Derek Auswalt (Fairmont State University Falcons), Chris Saunders (Menlo College Oaks) and Maurice Drayton (most recently with the Southern Mississipi Eagles).
