Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, GA - The Asheville Tourists beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-2 Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium in front of 3,469 fans, the second-largest crowd of the 2010 season for Savannah. The loss snapped the Gnats' (31-36/73-64) four-game winning streak.

C Juan Torres provided both of Savannah's runs with a blast of a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning that made the score 6-2. It was the third home run for Torres in his last four games.

The Tourists (40-28/69-68) built a 6-0 lead against Savannah starter Taylor Whitenton and reliever Guillaume Leduc, scoring single runs in the second, third and fifth innings against Whitenton and a pair in the sixth and one in the seventh against Leduc.

With the win, Asheville stayed alive in the race for the post-season and the second-half championship. The Tourists remained a game and a half behind the Greenville Drive who beat the Hickory Crawdads 10-2, Saturday. The Drive have a magic number of one to eliminate the Tourists. One more Greenville win or one more Asheville loss would give Greenville the second half title. The Gnats send LHP Darin Gorski (5-8, 4.75) to the mound Sunday at 6:05 pm against LHP Tyler Matzek (5-1, 2.95) for the Tourists, who must win to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Gates open at 5 pm and the pregame show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 5:50 pm.
