Asheville Tourists News Release
Augusta, GA- The Asheville Tourists (47-25, 1-1) won 1-0 over Augusta in the second game of the second half of the season on Friday. Jhoulys Chacin pitched six scoreless innings and Asheville's Helder Velazquez drove in the lone run of the game in the eighth inning to give Asheville the win. With two outs and pinch runner David Christensen on second base, Velazquez delivered a single to left field to break the tie and give the Tourists the win in the second game of a five game series.
Chacin (10-1) pitched six scoreless and allowed four hits in the no decision. Chacin pitched into the seventh and walked the first batter Jackson Williams and hit the next batter Charlie Culberson. Chacin was lifted for Craig Rodriguez who forced a fielders choice a walk and a strikeout.. Rodriguez then gave way to Craig Baker who struck out Nick Noonan with the bases loaded to preserve the one run lead. Baker (4-2) struck out the side in the eighth and Randall Taylor entered in the ninth to collect his league-leading 23rd save of the season.
All Star pitcher Daryl Maday pitched six scoreless innings in a no decision for the GreenJackets.. Augusta used four pitchers in the game and played without their closer Daniel Otero who was called up to San Jose prior to Friday's game. Asheville stranded the bases loaded in the seventh before breaking through off of Augusta reliever Ryan Paul (0-1) in eighth inning. Darin Holcomb walked with one out and was lifted for pinch runner David Christensen. A wild pitch moved Christensen to second before he came around to score on the single by Velazquez.
The Tourists play game three of the series tomorrow with Bruce Billings (4-4) against top draft pick Madison Bumgarner (6-2). The two pitchers dueled last week in a seven inning game with Augusta winning 1-0. The game starts at 7:05 and can be heard on WRES FM 100.7 FM or online at www.theashevilletourists.com .
