Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Dressed in 1950s style uniforms, paying homage to the Upstate's rich mill league history, the Drive (42-31, 2-1) dropped a heartbreaker to the visiting Hickory Crawdads (31-42, 1-2), 8-5. The crowd of 6,400 at Fluor Field, was the largest of the 2008 season.
As the saying goes, "walks will kill you," and that statement held true Saturday night for Greenville starter Chad Povich (5-1). The right-hander was perfect through three innings, but was not nearly effective the second time through the lineup.
In the fourth, Povich walked leadoff batter Jose De Los Santos but was helped out by the defense when catcher Luis Exposito mowed down the speedy infielder attempting a steal. After issuing a free pass to Albert Laboy, Povich surrendered consecutive doubles to Miles Durham and Erik Huber, with Huber collecting two-RBI. Bobby Spain then added a run scoring single.
Two more walks an inning later, to Keanon Simon and De Los Santos, proved just as costly as both runners eventually scored in a four-run fifth. Laboy doubled home Simon and Durham cleared the bases with a three-run homer.
Backed by Jered Stanley's first of two homers, the Drive took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Stanley and Ty Weeden hit back-to-back doubles, cutting Greenville's deficit to a run.
After the Crawdads big fifth inning, the Drive inched their way closer as they scored a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Stanley belted his second home run off Hickory starter Brad Lincoln (4-2) in the sixth.
Two innings later Stanley capped his perfect 4-for-4 evening with an RBI-double, scoring Ryan Kalish. Mike Jones later scored on a wild pitch.
The Drive and Crawdads continue their five-game series tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 4:05 PM at Fluor Field. Lefty Jose Alvarez will toe the rubber for Greenville as Hickory counters with right-hander Rafael De Los Santos.
Sunday is also "Bark in the Park" at Fluor Field, where fans can bring their dogs out to the ballpark. In addition, the Greenville Humane Society will have a table on the concourse level with information on pets available for adoption, and there will be on-field demonstrations from Speedy Paws Agility.
