Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Salisbury, Md.- By Joe, they won it! Joe Nowicki and Joe Mahoney each pounded solo homers that got Delmarva on the board in the fourth. An inning later, the Joes both doubled, leading to another Shorebird run and paving the way for Delmarva's 6-5 victory over the Suns. Nowicki and Mahoney combined to go 4-7 with four extra base hits, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Closer Mick Mattaliano recorded the final three outs in the ninth to pick up his 15th save and preserve the victory for Sean Gleason. Pitching for the first time since throwing a scoreless inning in Tuesday's All-Star Game, Gleason tossed five innings and picked up his fourth win of the season.

The Shorebirds trailed 3-0 after the Suns scored one in the second and two in the fourth, but leapfrogged over Hagerstown with four runs in the fourth inning. The two home runs from the Joes as well as a two-out two-run double from Matt Angle gave the Shorebirds their first lead of the series.

The Shorebirds bullpen once again held strong, allowing just one unearned run in four innings. Lefthander Brett Bordes got into trouble in the seventh when Hagerstown recorded back-to-back singles with one out. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases and Bordes gave way to righthander Brian Parker. Two batters later, Parker had consecutive strikeouts and the Shorebirds escaped the jam.

The Shorebirds will strive for a split of the four-gamer with the Suns Sunday evening in Salisbury.
