Asheville Tourists News Release
Savannah, GA-- The Savannah Sand Gnats should say two words to the Asheville Tourists after Tuesday night's 3-2 ballgame at Grayson Stadium, and those two words are "thank you".
Asheville outplayed Savannah by recording more hits but unfortunately committed two costly errors that led to all three of the Sand Gnats runs.
In the bottom of the first inning, Savannah had runners at second and third with one out. L.J.
Mazzilli hit a ground ball to the Tourists third baseman Ryan McMahon. After Ryan gloved the baseball, he looked both runners back to the bag but his throw to first sailed high allowing two runs to score.
The Tourists trailed 2-0 until finally breaking through in the top of the sixth. Emerson Jimenez reached second with a one-out double and went to third on David Dahl's bunt single to third. The next batter, Cesar Galvez put Asheville on the board with an RBI fielder's choice plating Jimenez.
The game remained 2-1 until Savannah added another unearned run in the eighth. Mazzilli reached on a misplayed groundball to Correlle Prime and later scored on Jorge Rivero's RBI single to center. The insurance run proved to be huge.
Asheville managed a run in the bottom of the ninth when McMahon brought home Galvez on a groundout; however, they needed two.
Konner Wade was sensational for the Tourists as he pitched 5.2 innings without surrendering an earned run. Daniel Palo worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief and Dylan Stamey pitched an inning for Asheville.
Kevin McGowan worked 8.1 innings for the home team and kept the Tourists hitters from putting together many opportunities despite only recording three strikeouts. Akeel Morris notched the final two outs for his second save of the season.
The Tourists will look to rebound on Wednesday with the series finale scheduled for 7:05pm.
