Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - This Sunday, April 15th, the Tortugas will commemorate the annual baseball-wide Jackie Robinson Day once again at The Jack, to celebrate Jackie's Major League debut and numerous accomplishments.
The story of Jackie Robinson is a heroic one. The sacrifices and impact he made on the game of baseball and society as a whole, has helped us get to where we are today. But it's a story that is often told without it's beginning.
Prior to Jackie breaking the color barrier at the Big League level in 1947, he made the first step towards equality by stepping on the field in Daytona Beach now know as Jackie Robinson Ballpark. And while Jackie Robinson and the number 42 have become synonymous, it was number nine that was donned on his back the day he played on City Island.
As has become customary, the Tortugas will once again be the lone team in baseball to wear all number nine jerseys during Sunday's game in tribute to Jackie. Additionally, the first 1,000 fans will receive special Jackie Robinson t-shirts upon entry to the ballpark.
And for the first time ever, live footage of Jackie Robinson playing on City Island will debut on the Tortugas jumbotron, courtesy of local historian Bill Schumann.
George Bates, Jackie Robinson's batboy from that fateful 1946 game, will be in attendance once again and will kick start the ceremonies by throwing a first pitch. Harold Lucas will be in attendance once again, sitting in the same stands Sunday as he did to watch Jackie back on March 17, 1946.
The Tortugas will also support Jackie Robinson Day with the special hashtag on social media, #Jackie9.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 PM Sunday, with gates opening at 4 PM. To purchase your tickets, call the Tortugas at (386) 257-3172 or visit daytonatortugas.com.
