Tortugas Rally with Mahle

May 10, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release

Viera, FL- The Daytona Tortugas tossed their first shutout of the season, blanking the Brevard County Manatees, 2-0, Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Daytona scored both runs on two-out base hits.

It was a pitchers duel between two top pitching prospects. RHP Tyler Mahle is ranked as the tenth top prospect for the Cincinnati Reds and outdueled LHP Kodi Medeiros, the sixth best prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.

The two exchanged strikeouts and scoreless innings for the first six frames of the ballgame. Through the first three stanza's, both starters combined for 10 strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Both pitchers used double plays to escape first inning jams, as Mahle left the bases loaded in the first inning. Medeiros used his twin-killing to leave a runner at third in the first.

The two starters then went on cruise control, answering each scoreless inning. Daytona eventually solved the riddle of Medeiros with two outs in the seventh. Avain Rachal cracked a triple off the right field wall to extend the inning, before Butler doubled up the third base line to take the 1-0 lead. It was the latest the first run has come in a Tortuga game this season.

In the following inning, Trahan extended his on-base streak to 16 games with a run-scoring single to right, scoring Jonathan Reynoso, who drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scampered home on the two-out hit.

Mahle finished the night with six innings of work, allowing two hits and racking up six strikeouts. Daytona pieced together the final three innings with LHP Greg Williams, RHP Evan Mitchell and RHP Jimmy Herget, who combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief. Herget notched his fifth save of the season in as many chances.

The Tortugas look to take the lead in the series Wednesday night back at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. RHP Keury Mella (1-4, 3.16 ERA) will start for Daytona, while Brevard County has not yet named a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:55 p.m. on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: It was the first shutout for Daytona since Sept. 8 of last year, when they blanked Clearwater 3-0 in the first game of the playoffs. Their last regular season shutout also came against Brevard County...With his hit in the eighth, it extended Trahan's hitting streak to seven games, tied for the longest of the season for a Tortuga...Daytona is now 11-0 when leading after eight innings.
