Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
JUPITER, FL - The Charlotte Stone Crabs, poised for their first sweep of the year, broke out the brooms on Tuesday in one of their most complete performances of the year.
The Stone Crabs tied a season-high with 14 hits, Hunter Wood through six-and-two-thirds innings of one-hit ball, and Charlotte finished off Palm Beach with a 6-2 win at Roger Dean Stadium.
This series represented the best offensive performance the Stone Crabs have put together all season. Coming into this week, Charlotte had scored five or more runs in just three of their first 29 games of the season. The Stone Crabs scored at least five in all three games of this series, rapping out 36 hits, easily their highest in a three-game span.
All five men at the top of the Charlotte batting order put together multi-hit efforts. Riley Unroe went 2-for-5 with his second home run of the season, ironically against the same pitcher off of whom he hit his first, Cardinals starter Jacob Evans (2-2). Bralin Jackson was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Cade Gotta continued his tear with a 2-for-4 day, scoring twice and walking once. Gotta finished the six-game road trip 12-for-25.
The two catchers, hitting fourth and fifth, had the best offensive days of the bunch. Nick Ciuffo, behind the plate on Tuesday, smacked two doubles and finished the day with three hits overall, scoring once and driving in a run. Mac James, who was stationed at first for the day, smashed out three hits as well, including an RBI single against Evans, his former teammate at the University of Oklahoma.
Wood (2-2) was characteristically tremendous on the mound. The righty had his phenomenal hammer curveball from the get-go, taking a no-hitter into the fourth and departing with two outs in the seventh having allowed a hit and a walk. Wood struck out seven and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.71. Jeff Howell got the last out of the seventh and pitched the eighth, and though Ian Gibaut lost the shutout and stumbled through the ninth, a 5-4-3 double play and a flyout kept the win intact.
The Stone Crabs, winners of three in a row and eight of their last ten, take their success back home to Charlotte Sports Park for a season-long ten-game homestand. We start with $2 Wednesday, featuring $2 parking, $2 reserved level tickets, $2 hot dogs, and $2 fountain sodas. For tickets, visit the FCB Box Office, call 941-206-HITS, or head to stonecrabsbaseball.com.
