Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
JUPITER, FL - Winning on #HoneyDay is starting to become a weekly tradition around these parts.
Cade Gotta hit a two-run home run, and Stone Crabs ace Brent Honeywell was solid again in a 5-2 Charlotte victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals on Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
Gotta has been on an unbelievable tear since taking over as the regular rightfielder in Justin Williams' absence. The hard-working Californian is slashing .333/.372/.494 after last night's bravura performance, in which he went 2-for-4 with the aforementioned seventh inning home run.
The game had been close up to that point, with the Stone Crabs clinging to a 3-2 lead. Honeywell (4-0) wasn't quite as sharp as he normally is, allowing two earned runs for the first time this season, both on a fourth-inning home run by Orlando Olivera. That was all the Cardinals could meaningfully muster against the top prospect, who finished his night allowing five hits and a walk in five-plus innings with six strikeouts.
Fortunately for Honeywell, the Stone Crabs bats were churning even before Gotta put the game to bed with his home run. Grant Kay doubled with one out in the second and went to third on a groundout. Cristian Toribio walked to bring up Thomas Milone, whose soft grounder to second was bobbled by Darren Seferina, scoring Kay to make it 1-0.
The Stone Crabs added more in the third. Riley Unroe walked to lead off the inning, and Alec Sole singled against Cardinals starter Blake McKnight (0-4). Gotta singled behind third to load the bases, and the red-hot Nick Ciuffo stepped up and smacked a two-run single to right to put Charlotte ahead 3-0.
The series rolls on Tuesday morning at Palm Beach with a special 10:30 a.m. start. RHP Hunter Wood (1-2, 2.04) takes the hill for the Stone Crabs against Cardinals LHP Jacob Evans (2-1, 1.54). You can listen to the game live on the Stone Crabs Radio Network.
