Daytona Tortugas News Release
Lakeland, FL - The Daytona Tortugas took the second half opener, defeating the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 10-5, at Henley Field Thursday night. All nine Tortugas recorded a hit, while Blake Trahan and Brian O'Grady each homered in the win. Daytona is now 13-3 in their last 16 games.
The game started as a back-and-forth battle when Daytona erupted for four runs in the second inning. With one out, Aristides Aquino and Ty Washington set the inning with a pair of singles. Garrett Boulware followed with a two-run double to score the pair of runners and give the Tortugas the 2-0 lead. Jonathan Reynoso followed with a single to plate Boulware, and Trahan collected one his three hits on the night to drive in Reynoso and give Daytona a 4-0 lead.
Lakeland struck right back for three runs in their half of the inning. With one out, the Flying Tigers strung together three hits, including an RBI double by Joey Pankake to get on the board. A Wade Hinkle sacrifice fly to left field and an RBI single by Ben Verlander quickly made it 4-3 through the first two innings.
In the fourth, Trahan belted his third homer of the season over the left field wall to give the Tortugas some breathing room, 5-3. However, Pankake answered with a homer of his own in the bottom half, making it a one-run game again, 5-4.
The Tortugas were able to create some distance in the eighth inning. Daytona sent eight men to the plate, but the inning was highlighted by O'Grady's sixth homer of the season to make it 8-5. Gavin LaValley added to the assault with an RBI double to score Angelo Gumbs and Aquino tripled home LaValley to give the game the final score of 10-5.
Daytona's RHP Ariel Hernandez (3-0) picked up the win in relief as he tossed two scoreless innings. Lakeland's RHP A.J. Ladwig (8-5) suffered the loss, working just four innings while being tagged for five runs on seven hits.
The Tortugas return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark to continue the series with Lakeland Friday. RHP Tejay Antone (6-4, 3.59 ERA) gets the start for Daytona, while Lakeland has yet to name their starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: The Tortugas have won 8 of their last 9 games, outscoring opponents 54-27 in that span...Aquino extended his hitting streak to 10 games, which is the longest active streak on the team...Daytona has collected double-digit hits in four of the last five games, racking up 54 hits in total.
