Tortugas Hold off Late Rally

Daytona Beach, FL - Jonathan Reynoso's seventh-inning RBI single proved to be the difference in Daytona's 2-1 win over the Brevard County Manatees Sunday evening at Space Coast Stadium. Brevard was held to just five hits, as Daytona took thee of four games in the opening series.

Brevard struck first, with their lone run coming in the second inning. Jose Cuas drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Johnny Davis.

Otherwise, Brevard left 10 men on-base, including six over the first four frames, while going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Daytona was stymied by Eric Hanhold throughout, with the lone exception coming in the fourth inning. Brian O'Grady took the righty starter deep to right field for his first home run of the year, tying the game at one.

As Brevard continued to leave men on base, Daytona eventually took their first lead against the Manatee bullpen. With one out, Jeff Gelalich reached on a Dustin DeMuth error at first base. He advanced to second base on Blake Butler's first hit of the year, and came around to score on a two out RBI single to right field by Reynoso.

Jake Ehret put two of the first three ninth inning batters on base, before closing the door to his first save of the year. With two on, and one out, Ehret proceed to induce a Davis groundout to Blake Trahan at short. Trahan, ranging to his right, cut down the lead runner at third for the second out of the frame. One batter late, Angel Ortega hit a slow roller behind the second base bag, sliding head first into first just after Trahan's throw.

The Tortuga's pitching staff combined to allow just one hit over the last five innings.

RHP Evan Mitchell (1-0) got the win in relief, striking out five over two scoreless innings. Kender Villegas (0-2) earned his second loss of the series, allowing the go-ahead run in his 1 1/3 innings of work. RHP Jake Ehret earned his fourth career save.

The Tortugas now head south to Roger Dean Stadium to take on the Palm Beach Cardinals for a four game series. Monday's first pitch is schedule for 6:35 PM, with the Chili's pregame show beginning at 6:20 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

NOTES: Daytona has won five straight series of 3+ games over Brevard County...Daytona has opened each of the past two seasons by winning three of four from the Manatees...RHP Wyatt Strahan struck out six batters and walked five in his first career Tortugas start, earning a no-decision.
