Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Will Morris delivered a strong season debut against the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Tuesday night, as the Threshers dropped a tight one, 2-1 at Bright House Field.
Morris worked the front five, and did not factor in the decision after a scoreless season debut. The right-hander held Charlotte to four hits - all singles - and a walk, while striking out three. He finished with 83 pitches, 53 for strikes.
Over the last four games, Threshers starting pitchers have surrendered just five runs on 16 hits over 21 innings - a 2.14 ERA.
Matt Hockenberry entered in place of Morris to begin the sixth inning, and faced the minimum through two shutout frames.
After Brent Honeywell kept Clearwater (3-3) off the board for the first six frames, Mitch Walding broke the scoreless tie in the seventh.
With one down, Walding pounced on the first offering from Yonny Chirinos (1-0) and launched a solo bomb onto the berm in right-center, putting Clearwater ahead 1-0.
The home run for Walding was his second in as many nights, and his third of the young season. Last year he finished with four home runs in 120 games.
Jesen Therrien (0-1) retired the first two men in the eighth on a flight and groundout, before inducing a swing-and-miss from Bralin Jackson for what would have been out number three. The ball bounced by catcher Gabriel Lino for a passed ball, allowing Jackson to race to down to first.
Cristian Toribio followed by lining a two-run homer into the bullpen in left, the deciding factor in the Threshers 2-1 loss.
The Threshers and Stone Crabs square off for game three of the the four-game set on Wednesday with a 12 p.m. first pitch. Thomas Eshelman (0-1) will toe the rubber opposed by Hunter Wood (1-0). The call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 11:45 p.m.
