Daytona Tortugas News Release
Lakeland, FL - The Daytona Tortugas managed just three hits in their 3-2 loss against the Lakeland Flying Tigers Monday night at Henley Field. Aristides Aquino and Taylor Sparks drove in the pair of runs for Daytona, who went 2-for-12 with men in scoring position and left eight on base.
For the third straight night the Tortugas offense scored in the opening inning. Blake Trahan led the game off with a walk followed, by a Jeff Gelalich single, and Taylor Sparks put the Tortugas on the board with a single to right field, scoring Trahan. For Sparks it was sixth RBI in the last six games.
Lakeland followed with two unanswered runs, tying the game in the second on an RBI double from Zach Sheppard. In the fourth, a pair of errors on the same play by Sparks allowed Kade Scivique to score from second, giving Lakeland the 2-1 lead.
Aquino came through in the fifth, picking up his sixth RBI in his last two games with a two-out single to right field, scoring Trahan once again. But the Tortugas would be held hitless over the final 15 batters of the game.
LHP Ismael Guillon (1-1) was unable to keep the Flying Tigers off the board in the home half of fifth, allowing back-to-back extra base hits to allow Lakeland to take the lead, on a Mike Gerber double down the right field line.
RHP Jeff Thompson (1-0) picked up the win, holding off the Tortugas in four-plus innings of work, allowing just one run on one hit, while working around four walks.
Daytona was outhit in the loss 12 to 3 but was able to stay in the game by drawing six walks and stealing six bases. However, Daytona was held to less than three runs for the 12th time this season.
The Tortugas continue their series with Lakeland Tuesday night at 6 PM. RHP Tejay Antone (1-2, 3.86 ERA) gets the ball for Daytona against RHP Endrys Briceno (0-2, 6.75 ERA). Coverage begins with the Chili's pre-game show at 5:45 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
Notes: Eli Marrero used six pitchers tonight, the most he has used in any game this season...Trahan extended his on-base streak to nine games. His longest prior was six games. He has now been on-base nine times over the last six games...Brennan Bernardino came in with the bases loaded in the eight and stranded all three runners. He has now left 9 of his last 10 runners inherited on base this season, including the last nine...Daytona's six steals were the most in the short two year history of the Tortugas.
