
Errors Cost T-Yanks in 6-2 Loss to Threshers

TAMPA, Fla. - A pair of costly errors by the Tampa Yankees (15-10) led to five unearned runs as the Clearwater Threshers (17-8) took a 6-2 win in the series opener on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
RHP Joey Maher (L, 1-1) took the loss despite only allowing a pair of unearned runs in four and a third innings. Making his fifth appearance and first start, Maher held Clearwater to three hits and two walks, striking out four.
The Threshers opened the scoring in the second. Mitch Walding hit a one-out single and advanced as Zach Green reached on a fielding error at shortstop by Jorge Mateo. Later in the inning, Derek Campbell pulled an RBI single into left, giving Clearwater a 1-0 lead.
Tampa quickly responded in the home half against RHP Will Morris. Miguel Andujar flicked a single into shallow right and Abiatal Avelino followed with a bloop double down the right field line. A walk by Zack Zehner loaded the bases and Austin Aune tied the score with a sacrifice fly.
Derek Campbell began the fifth by reaching on a second error by Mateo at shortstop. One out later, RHP Eric Ruth relieved Maher. Cord Sandberg walked and Carlos Tocci beat an infield single, loading the bases. After a strikeout by Kyle Martin, Ruth hit Walding with a pitch, forcing in a run. Zach Green then cleared the bases by lining a two-out, 3-2 pitch into right center for a double.
Ruth surrendered three unearned runs on five hits in three and a third innings of relief, walking one while striking out a pair.
The Yankees got a run back in the bottom of the fifth. Aune doubled and Francisco Diaz singled, placing runners on the corners. One out later, Mateo beat out a double play, allowing Aune to cross the plate for a 5-2 score.
Clearwater tacked on an insurance run in the ninth against RHP Philip Walby. Tocci reached on a hit-by-pitch and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a two-out triple by Walding.
RHP Jesen Therrien closed the game with a 1-2-3 ninth, tallying two strikeouts.
Morris (2-1) earned the win, holding the Yankees to two earned runs on seven hits in five and two-third innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out three. RHP Ulises Joaquin held the Yankees hitless in an inning and a third, striking out two.
Andujar (2-for-3, BB, R) recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Mateo (1-for-4, RBI) tallied his team-leading 18th RBI.
The series continues in Clearwater at Bright House Field on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Brody Koerner (1-0, 1.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. RHP Tom Eshelman (1-1, 1.80 ERA) is slated make the start for the Threshers.
Following another game in Clearwater on Wednesday, the series resumes with a 10:30 a.m. first pitch on Thursday at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Every Thursday Tampa Yankees home game, fans can enjoy 14 oz. draft beer for $2 and 1/2 price regular soda from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
