DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Tortugas led 2-0 after one, but the Palm Beach Cardinals scored the next six to build a lead, before winning 6-3 on Tuesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The game got off to a late start following a 41-minute rain delay.
Daytona got the nights scoring started in their half of the first inning. Randy Ventura led the frame off with a single, then scored two pitches later on a Taylor Trammell two-run homerun, his eighth of the season.
Palm Beach evened up the score in the top of the second. With one-out and runners on second and third, RHP Andrew Jordan threw a wild pitch allowing Jose Godoy to score, making it a 2-1 game. Irving Lopez moved to third on the play, and later scored on a sac fly from Chase Pinder to tie the game up at two.
The Cardinals added two more in the top of the fifth to take their first lead of the series. After Jordan retired the first two in the inning, he allowed a two-out walk and infield single to extend the frame. LHP Ty Boyles then came on and allowed both inherited runners to score. The first, JB Woodman, scored on a Godoy double to make it 3-2. The double moved Shane Billings up to third. He came into score on a Danny Hudzina infield single, making it 4-2.
Palm Beach added two more runs in their half of the eighth. Lopez reached on a one-out walk, and scored from first on an RBI double from Juan Yepez to run the lead to 5-2. Yepez scored three pitches later on a two-base throwing error from third basemen John Sansone to go up 6-2.
Daytona would get a run back in the bottom of the eighth to round out the scoring at 6-3. With two-outs and the bases loaded, Alberti Chavez drove in Tyler Stephenson with an infield single.
RHP Jesus Cruz (3-0) takes the win. He allowed two runs on five hits in five innings. He also walked two Tortugas, allowed a homerun, and struck out seven. Jordan (1-3) is handed the loss. He allowed four runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out five, both Tortuga career-highs.
The series with the Cardinals will conclude tomorrow night with a rubber match. The Tortugas are 2-8 in series deciding games this season and have lost seven straight. RHP Tommy Bergjans (2-2, 4.69) will get the ball for Daytona, and he'll be matched up against RHP Jake Walsh (5-2, 2.16) who's scheduled to start for Palm Beach.
First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 7:05 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:50 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
NOTES: The Tortugas fall to 0-31 when trailing after 8 innings... Daytona finished 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base... RHP Andrew Jordan had 3 losses in 10 starts with Dayton to start the season. He has already lost 3 times in 4 starts with Daytona... LHP Ty Boyles tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits with 2 strikeouts. Boyles has a 1.09 ERA in 24 2/3 innings out of the bullpen in 15 appearances... Taylor Trammell homered at The Jack for the first time since 5/24. He also recorded his team leading 25th multi-hit game... Randy Ventura finished 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored, his 11th multi-hit effort in 31 games with the Tortugas... Brantley Bell stole a base in back-to-back games for the first time this season.
