TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Tarpons (15-16, 50-51) batted around in the opening inning and went on to even the series with an 8-3 win over the Bradenton Marauders (12-20, 47-50) on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Diego Castillo singled and Gleyber Torres reached on an error before a walk by Isiah Gilliam loaded the bases with one out in the first against RHP James Marvel.
Dom Thompson-Williams lined a two-run single to right-center and Donny Sands followed with an RBI single to left. One out later, a walk by Hoy Jun Park reloaded the bags and Angel Aguilar looped a two-run single into shallow center, giving the Tarpons a 5-0 lead.
Torres drew a walk in the second and scored when Gilliam hit a two-run blast off the bottom of the batter's eye for his 12th homer of the season.
RHP Garrett Whitlock started for Tampa and worked around three walks while keeping Bradenton hitless through the first three innings. After stranding a one-out single in the fourth, the Marauders struck back in the fifth.
Jason Delay and Lucas Tancas both singled and scored on a two-out, three-run homer by Adrian Valerio, cutting the lead to 7-3.
The Tarpons added their final run when Sands doubled and scored on a two-out single by Aguilar in the fifth.
Marvel (L, 9-6) lasted just four and two-third innings, snapping a streak of four-straight seven-inning starts. The 24-year-old allowed a season-high eight runs (five earned) on nine hits, walking three while striking out three on 97 pitches (63 strikes).
Whitlock (W, 4-2) left after issuing a one-out walk in the sixth. The 22-year-old allowed three earned runs on four hits in five and a third innings, walking four while striking out three on 90 pitches (53 strikes).
LHP Trevor Lane struck out one while walking one over a scoreless inning and two-thirds. RHP Matt Frawley retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth.
LHP Ronny Augustin tallied four strikeouts while yielding a hit and a walk in a scoreless two and a third relief innings for Bradenton. RHP Blake Cederlind walked one in a quiet eighth.
Torres (0-for-2, BB, 2R) got three plate appearances as the designated hitter before leaving his third rehab game. The 21-year-old is scheduled to rejoin the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
Sands (3-for-4, 2 2B's, RBI, 2R) logged his third three-hit game. Castillo (2-for-4, BB, R) and Gilliam (2-for-4, HR, 2B, BB, 2RBI, 2R) also reached base three times. Aguilar (2-for-4, 3RBI) has multiple hits in six of his last seven games.
The series will be decided with the rubber game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. RHP Adonis Rosa (10-3, 3.95) will make the start against RHP Gavin Wallace (1-0, 4.50).
