
Torrid Surf Win Seventh Straight

The Atlantic City Surf defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Sandcastle before 2110. It was the Surf''s seventh straight victory. Atlantic City is now 22-8 in the second half of the Atlantic League season and 27-11 under manager Mitch Williams.
Atlantic City got another stellar pitching effort from righthander Anthony Chavez, who worked seven innings and only allowed six hits and one run. Chavez, who is 4-0 on the season, struck out six and walked two. The Surf got RBIs from Ric Johnson, Jose Velasquez and Garry Lee Maddox to beat Somerset for the fourth straight time. The Patriots had the tying run at home plate with two runners on and two out in the ninth but Surf supercloser Craig Mattson struck out Duke Baxter to end the game. It was Mattson''s 23rd save of the season. Maddox hit his 12th home run of the season for Atlantc City in the seventh inning. Justin Jensen took the loss for Somerset, 14-5.
The two teams meet again Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at the Sandcastle. Brian Williams (5-5) pitches for Atlantic City against Ricardo Jordan (9-7).
