Pioneers win 4th in a row in 4-2 decision vs. Quebec

Rafael Alvarez stayed red-hot at the plate with 10th HR of the season as the Pioneers topped the Quebec Capitales 4-2 Tuesday night at Dunn Field in front of 1182 fans.

Alvarez earned NLE player of the week honors last week and continued his hot hitting. The left-fielder now has 11 RBI's and 2 HR's in his last 6 games. His HR was his team-leading 10th of the season.

Jeff Andra (9-5) surrendered 2 solo HR's in the 1st inning but settled down to slam the door on Quebec for the next 7 frames to earn the victory. Andra lasted 8ip giving up 7 hits with 2 er, 1bb, and 7 K's.

Joe Thomas (8-5) took the loss for the Capitales allowing 6h in 6ip with 4er, 4bb, 3K's. Thomas had spun a 3-hit shutout against the Pioneers the last time he faced the team 6/29 at Quebec.

Donnie Thmas closed it out in the 9th inning for his 2nd save since inheriting the closer role from Julio Perez last week. Perez had 15 saves and 0.00 ERA and was signed by the Yankees organization last week.

Brandon Pernell singled in the 1st to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Brian Jones had a pair of hits and an RBI and is 7-for-12 in his last 3 games.

This was the 1st of 6 games vs. Quebec over the next week and a half for the Pioneers.

Elmira is 41-30 overall and 16-10 in the 2nd half. While still trailing NJ 4.5 to 5.5 games in the 2nd half race Elmira still has a comfortable lead of at last 3 games over Adirondack in the wildcard race determined by next best overall record..

The Pioneers have won 4 straight for the 5th time this season. They have yet to put together a 5-game win streak this year but will try t do that Wednesday night at Dunn Field on City of Elmira Employees night. Greg Keagle (6-9) will start for the Pioneers while the Capitales have not announced their starter. LH Danny Prata (9-3) is a possibility.

The homestand wraps up Thursday evening on Star-Gazette Family night. Sean Brummett (7-4, 2.47) toes the rubber for Elmira against tim Stanton (9-3). After the homestand, the Pioneers have a 6-game road-trip through Adirondack and Quebec.
