Toros Sweep Jam in Back-to-Back Games

Austin, TX March 28, 2010- After 17 lead changes throughout the game against Bakersfield at the Austin Convention Center Sunday, the Toros were able to add another win to their record, 122-110.

The teams kept it close to start the game, heading in to the second quarter tied at 37. During the first quarter the lead was exchanged four times and neither team was able to gain an advantage larger than two possessions.

Both teams capitalized on their ability to shoot free-throws in the second quarter, with the Jam shooting a perfect 11-for-11 to the Toros 7-for-12. The game continued to stay close throughout the quarter with both teams staying within four points of each other. Heading into intermission, the Jam had a two-point advantage, 65-63. Bakersfield's Trey Johnson led all at the half with 17 points.

The Toros began to pull away in the third quarter after a 12-2 run that put them ahead, 75-69. Curtis Jerrells had 11 points in the quarter. Austin played smart defense that only allowed Bakersfield to visit the free throw line twice during the quarter. John Edwards battled foul trouble in the third (three fouls in the quarter) which helped the Toros expand their lead after 11 free throw points. Michael Joiner's steal with :07 left in the third allowed for Squeaky Johnson's lay-up to end the quarter, 97-88.

Johnson's three-point jumper with 2:48 left in the game put Bakersfield within five, 113-108. Michael Joiner's long shot after a Jam timeout extended the Toros lead and allowed them to not look back.

Both teams shot near 50% from the field, but the Toros had the advantage from beyond the arc, nine baskets to the Jams' five.

All five of the Toros starters scored in double figures: Dwayne Jones (27), Marcus Williams (26), Jerrells (19), and Eddie Basden (16). Squeaky Johnson added 12 points off the bench. Williams added seven assists.

adidas player of the game Jones added 12 rebounds and went to the free throw line 17 times throughout the game.

Trey Johnson led all in scoring and had a season-high 41 points. Four other players from Bakersfield scored in double figures: Reece Gaines (18), Jeremy Wise (14), John Williams (11), and Brian Butch (10). Butch led all with 15 rebounds.

Austin (30-16) will return to the Austin Convention Center Tuesday night when they host the L.A. D-Fenders at 7:30 p.m. The Jam (17-31) will enjoy a few days off before heading to Sioux Falls on Friday for a two-game series to end their season.
