Des Moines, IA, Mar. 28, 2010 - Dakota Wizards guard Maurice Baker scored 11 of his 18 points in the final 3:53 of the game as the Wizard defeated the Iowa Energy 107-99 Sunday in Des Moines.
Iowa jumped out to a 59-52 lead at halftime as Energy forward Cartier Martin and guard Curtis Stinson each scored 15 points in the half. The Wizards, fighting for a spot in the D-League playoffs, rallied in the 3rd quarter behind a 13-0 run to tie the game at 79 heading into the final quarter.
The two Eastern Conference rivals traded buckets early in the 4th quarter before a Cartier Martin 3-pointer put Iowa up 95-91 with 5:07 remaining in the game. After the teams traded misses and turnovers, Baker went to work. The veteran guard nailed three straight 3-pointers as part of a 9-1 Dakota run to take a 100-96 lead with 2:00 left. After a Cartier Martin free throw to bring Iowa within three, Wizards guard Darren Cooper put the game out of reach with a 3-pointer of his own. Dakota went 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the final minute to put Iowa away.
Corsley Edwards led Dakota with 19 points and 9 rebounds while Renaldo Major added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dakota moves to 28-20 on the year with the win.
The Energy were led by Martin's 28 points and 7 rebounds while Earl Barron (18 points, 14 rebounds) and Curtis Stinson (26 points, 13 assists) each had double-doubles for the home team. Iowa falls to 36-12 on the season.
The Energy's "magic number" remains at 2 to clinch the #1 overall seed in the D-League playoffs. That means the combination of Iowa wins and Rio Grande Valley losses must be 2 or more the rest of the season for the Energy to clinch the top seed.
The Energy travel to Tulsa for a pair of weekend games on Friday and Saturday. Energy playoff packages and single game playoff tickets will go on sale this week. For tickets, visit www.iowanba.com or call 515-564-8550.
