Austin Spurs News Release
AUSTIN, TEXAS, Jan. 26 -- Clay Tucker hit the game winning jumper as time expired to lift the Arkansas RimRockers to a 103-101 victory over the Austin Toros at the Austin Convention Center.
Trailing by as many as 12 points at the beginning of the second quarter, the RimRockers capitalized on Austin turnovers with a 14-2 run that included a three pointer by Tucker to go up 49-47. Arkansas continued to control the pace of the game in the third quarter never allowing Austin to regain their first half momentum.
Ramel Curry's layup with 1:41 remaining in the fourth quarter tied the game at 96 but was immediately answered by dunks from Donta Smith and Martynas Andriuskevicius to put the RimRockers up by four. The game appeared to be headed to overtime after Curry hit a three pointer to tie to game at 101-101 with only six seconds remaining.
"We quit playing together, we had no spacing on the floor, passes deflected and turnovers," Toros head coach Dennis Johnson said. "These are things that can be easily cleaned up - we just have to be willing to do it."
The RimRockers avenged their first loss of the season in which they saw Ezra Williams' three pointer with a second remaining spoil their opening night festivities in Little Rock. Arkansas returned the favor on the Toros' home court.
"We've been playing well as a team the past five or six games," RimRocker forward Clay Tucker said. "This is a big win for us - I think it got us over the hump but tomorrow's game is just as big."
Marcus Fizer's 26 point, seven rebound game wasn't enough to put the Toros (11-10) in the win column. Ramel Curry chipped in with 23 points, connecting on 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
James Lange led the RimRockers recording a double-double performance scoring 23 points combined with 16 rebounds. Smith added 15 points and seven assists and Martynas Andriuskevicius contributed 14 points and six rebounds in his first game for the RimRockers.
The Austin Toros and Arkansas RimRockers meet again tomorrow night at 7:30 pm at the Austin Convention Center.
