Roanoke Dazzle News Release
ROANOKE, VA - The NBA Development League's leading scorer, Will Bynum, poured in a game-high 29 points to lead the Roanoke Dazzle to a 116-113 victory over the Fayetteville Patriots.
The Dazzle entered the contest with three of the top 10 scorers in the D-League with Bynum, Anthony Grundy and Isiah Victor, who rank 1, 2 and 8 respectively. The "Big Three" led six total Dazzle players in double figures with Bynum's 29, Grundy had 26, Victor added 18, Seth Doliboa had 12, Kevin Owens had his second double-double in a row with 12 rebounds to go with 11 points and Bryant Matthews chipped in with 11 as well.
The Dazzle roared out of the gates building a lead that reached as many as 21 points in the second quarter. This lead would not last as the Patriots scratched and clawed their way back into the contest, eventually taking a one point lead in the third quarter. The Dazzle regained the lead seconds later, and would not relinquish it the rest of the game.
"That's pro basketball," said Dazzle head coach Kent Davison. "There are good players on that other team and they started doing the things they needed to do to get back into the game. I was really proud of our guys, we were able to hang on and build the lead back, it says a lot about the heart of our guys."
For the Patriots, the game was a story of turnovers, having 25 total for the game. The most costly came with 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter and a chance to tie with a three-point shot but Bryant Matthews was able to pick Mike King's pocket to seal the win for the Dazzle.
Patriots head coach Mike Brown said, "We have to handle the ball better, we had 25 turnovers. We can't win doing that." Brown was pleased with his team's effort to get back into the game, "Our guys really fought back, we were able to get over that hump and get going a little bit."
For the game the Patriots had six players score in double figures being led by Boston Celtics assignee, Gerald Green with 21. Joining Green in double figures was Erik Daniels with 18, Ryan Randle with 14, Sharrod Ford and Norm Richardson with 11 each and Mike King with 10 points.
With the win, the Dazzle improves to 11-13 on the season. With the loss the Patriots now drop to 5-16 on the season. Both teams will next play each other again tomorrow night at the Roanoke Civic Center, with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m. This will be the fifth meeting between these two teams in the month of January.
