March 27, 2010 - NBA G League (G League)
Austin Spurs News Release
Austin, TX - The Austin Toros clinched their spot in the playoffs, after beating the Bakersfield Jam at the Austin Convention Center, 111-92.
Bakersfield's defense provided them a 32-20 lead after the first quarter. Brian Butch had 10 defensive rebounds in the quarter, and helped limit the Toros scoring. Squeaky Johnson missed an open three at the buzzer.
The Toros were able to shorten the lead to seven multiple times during the second quarter, but it was not enough to contain Jeremy Wise and Reece Gaines who both had 14 points in the first half. Eddie Basden nailed a three with :27 left in the half before stealing the ball away from Trey Johnson. Basden then passed the ball down court to Marcus Williams who was able to dunk with :10 left, ending the quarter with a Jam lead 58-49.
Austin went on a 15-6 run to begin the third quarter. Basden's 24' jumper tied the game at 64. During the run Austin held Bakersfield to only 1-7 from the field. Dwayne Jones put the Toros within three with 1:57 left in the quarter after a made free throw. Neither team scored in the remainder of the quarter, allowing the Jam to hold their lead, 76-73.
The fourth quarter began with both teams going to the line, making four freebies a piece during the first two minutes. Williams gave the Toros the lead after a long jumper. Johnson extended the Toros lead after back-to-back three pointers. Jones riled up the crowd with a wide-open layup that extended Austin's lead, 98-85.
Two key factors that helped the Toros in the game were fast-break points (30-6) and three-point shots (15-3).
All five of the Toros starters scored in double figures: Curtis Jerrells (26), Williams (23), Basden (19), Jones (14), and Michael Joiner (10). Jerrells had a season-high 14 assists and Jones added 14 rebounds. Johnson tied his season-high with 17 points off the bench.
Jam's Butch earned a double-double with 22 points and 20 rebounds. Bakersfield's four other starters also scored in double figures: Gaines (17), Johnson (16), Wise (16), and Daniels (13).
The Toros will host Bakersfield tomorrow for an afternoon game at the Austin Convention Center. Tip-off is set for 5:00 CST.
