AUSTIN, Texas Dec. 9- The Austin Toros defeated the Albuquerque Thunderbirds in a fourth quarter thriller Thursday night at the Austin Convention Center, 109-104.
The Thunderbirds came out strong in the first quarter shooting a perfect 10 for 10 in free throws. They continued to dominate the Toros until the Toros went on an 8-2 run to end the half 49-48.
Despite shooting 5-14 at the line in the first half, the Toros, led by Alonzo Gee with 13 points, were able to fight back. Thunderbirds' Keith McLeod led both sides at the half with 15 points, converting 8 of 10 from the free throw line.
The third quarter was a tight one, but the T-Birds were able to take back the lead, heading into the fourth quarter with a three-point lead at 77-74. The two teams exchanged leads nine times during the quarter and were tied seven times.
The close play continued in the fourth quarter, but a layup by Curtis Jerrells with 14 seconds left kept the Toros up for good, making the score 107-104. Two free throws by Gee with four seconds left sealed the victory for the Toros.
"I thought Curtis really managed the game. He made a bunch of big plays," said Toros Head Coach Quin Snyder. "Alonzo throughout the course of the game played very well, especially defensively against one of the best players in the league."
The adidas Player of the Game, Gee led the Toros with 32 points and six boards. Other notables include Curtis Jerrells 23 points, Clinch 11 points and seven rebounds, and Dwayne Jones with his sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds.
The Thunderbirds had two players score more than 20 points including Keith McLeod, 25 and Carlos Powell, 23.
The Toros return Friday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m. to face the Bakersfield Jam at the Austin Convention Center.
