Bakersfield Jam News Release

(Bakersfield, Calif. - December 9, 2009) - The Bakersfield Jam are thrilled to announce the reacquisition of first-round draft pick Amara Sy after a wrist injury forced him to miss the team first four games. Former Tennessee-Chattanooga guard Stephen McDowell was released to make room on the roster for Sy.

"Amara was our first pick for a reason," said Jam head coach Will Voigt. "It will be a huge lift for our team to have him back in uniform."

Sy, the fourth overall pick in the 2009 NBA D-League Draft, is a 6'8", 225-lb forward coming off of a championship season with ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne of France's ProA league. In 24 games for ASVEL in ProA last season, he averaged 13.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and a steal in 30.3 minutes per game.

Sy also stepped his game up in ASVEL's six Eurocup games, scoring 16.0 points per game (on an impressive 57.1% FG shooting and 50% three-point shooting) to go with 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals. His performance was good enough to earn him his third career ProA All-Star Game appearance, piling on to the All-Star and All-Defensive team honors he earned in Greece's A-1 league during the 2007-08 season.

"We were always counting on Amara to play a big role, and it's been tough on us to have to start the season without him," Jam co-owner David Higdon said. "I know it's been difficult for him having to sit and watch his teammates struggle on the court, too - everyone is very excited to get him out there and involved."

McDowell, a 6'0", 180-lb guard, had played in three of the Jam's first four games averaging 3.7 points, 1.7 assists and 1.0 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per game.
