Toronto FC News Release
Toronto FC announced Thursday that midfielder Sam Cronin and forward Ali Gerba will both be representing their respective countries in this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup that begins July 3. Cronin (U.S.) will depart for the American camp in Seattle, Washington on June 30, while Gerba (Canada) has already left for the Canadian camp being held in Oxnard, California.
Cronin, 22, is making his debut with the U.S. National team earning his first ever call-up. After being drafted 1st round, 2nd overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Cronin has started all but one game this season for Toronto FC in MLS play. He's added a goal and two assists in 1,215 minutes of action. The midfielder has also started three of four games in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship
Gerba, 27, will be appearing in his third CONCACAF Gold Cup. In 2005 he was with the Canadian team when they did not advance out of the group stage, while in 2007 Canada was eliminated by the U.S. in the semi-finals.
Canada plays in Group A and will play their first match of the tournament on July 3 as they face Jamaica in Carson, California at the Home Depot Center. Other teams in Group A include Costa Rica and El Salvador. The U.S. opens their tournament on July 4 at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington. The Americans will take on Grenada in a Group B match up while Honduras and Haiti round out the group.
