Landon Donovan Nominated for an Espy

CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, June 25, 2009) - LA Galaxy captain Landon Donovan has been nominated for an ESPY Award it was announced today. Donovan, who is currently in South Africa with the U.S. National Team at the FIFA Confederations Cup, has been nominated in the Best MLS Player category, marking the fourth straight year in which he has been nominated in this category.

This is the eighth straight year in which Donovan has been nominated for an ESPY, having won the award three times. He has been nominated in the "Best MLS Player" category award every year since its inception in 2006, winning it in 2006 and 2007 while missing out to teammate David Beckham in 2008.

In 2002, 2003 and 2004 Donovan was nominated in the "Best Male Soccer Player" category, winning the ESPY in 2002. In 2005, he was nominated in the "Best Soccer Player" category.

In addition to Donovan, Juan Pablo Angel, Jon Busch, Kenny Cooper and Guillermo Barros Schelotto have also been nominated for the award.

The ESPY Awards honor the best achievements, moments and leading athletes of the previous year. Fans will determine winners in 37 categories through online (www.espys.tv) and mobile phone voting (www.espn.mobi) that begins today and runs through Saturday, July 11.

The awards will be presented July 15 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, with the taped show airing July 19 on ESPN. Actor Samuel L. Jackson will host.
