Revolution's Heaps earns U.S. National Team call for Gold Cup

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution defender Jay Heaps is among the 23 players named by U.S. Men's National Team head coach Bob Bradley to the United States' roster for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the biennial regional championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. The roster also includes former Revolution defender and Cranston, R.I., native Michael Parkhurst, and former Boston College and Manchester, N.H., product Charlie Davies.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup will be played July 3-26 in 13 cities across the country, including in Foxborough at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, July 11. The United States is the two-time defending champion of the biennial event, having won the 2005 and 2007 titles.

The U.S. begins Group B play at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 4 against Grenada in Seattle at Qwest Field, before traveling cross-country to face Honduras on Wednesday, July 8 at 9 p.m. at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. will play its final Group B match in Foxborough at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 11 against Haiti in the second game of a special soccer tripleheader. All of the U.S. matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel and the Univision networks, with all three group games airing on TeleFutura.

Heaps has been called into U.S. National Team camp several times, but is still looking for his first appearance. He was most recently called into the National Team squad for a FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Panama on Oct. 12, 2005, but did not see any action.

Heaps is the Revolution's active leader in all three of the team's career longevity categories (games played, games started, minutes played) and is third in MLS career minutes played (26,273), fourth in career games started (286) and 10th in career appearances (301). This season, he has started all 12 of the Revs' matches, playing every minute of the season and adding one goal and two assists in MLS action.

Heaps will join the U.S. National Team in Seattle on Tuesday, June 30, and will not be available for the Revs' U.S. Open Cup match that night in New Britain, Conn.

Parkhurst has five caps with the U.S. National Team, while Davies currently has nine appearances while scoring two goals. Davies is presently with the National Team at the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa as the team prepares for the championship match after posting a historic victory over the world's number-one ranked team, Spain, yesterday.

Bradley selected 15 players from Major League Soccer for his 2009 Gold Cup roster, while the remaining eight hail from overseas club teams.

The U.S. is 21-0-1 all-time in group play at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The U.S has won four Gold Cup titles - 1991, 2002, 2005 and 2007 - and has also finished second twice and third twice. Overall, the U.S. has a 34-4-5 record in nine Gold Cup tournaments.

Tickets to the special soccer tripleheader at Gillette Stadium, featuring the U.S. National Team, on July 11, are on sale now.
