Tornadoes Win First 1-0 Contest of 2011 on Minicozzi Homer

Mark Minicozzi knocked the only run of the game in with his 11th homerunof the season as the Tornadoes defeated the New York Federals 1-0 on Saturday night. Shawn Gilblair pitched eight scoreless innings to earn his fourth victory (4-5) and Rick Asadoorian notched his 11th save of the year by striking out the side in order in the ninth.
Minicozzi was the only batter to reach base in the fourth with his solo shot. Through the first seven innings, Tornadoes hitters reached base exactly once in each frame.
In his team-high 14th start of the year, Gilblair had his best outing. He struck out 13 New York Federals, walked none of them, and allowed just five hits.
Jim Schult was one out away from pitching a complete game against Worcester as the tough luck loser (2-3). In his 7.2 innings, the Federals righthander struck out six, walked two and gave up five hits. James Bierlein retired the only batter he faced, Minicozzi, to end the eighth.
Brendon Kelliher recorded a double, while Chris Colabello, Ryan Crespi and Cameron Monger all singled against Schult.
The win was Worcester's tenth in 11 games against New York and its first 1-0 win this season against any opponent. Each of the previous Tornadoes triumphs over the Federals was by three runs or more.
The final game of the season series is on Sunday afternoon at 4:05, as Ryan Lobban will be on the mound for Worcester. The gates at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field open at 3:00pm. Local singer Bunty Shakur will will make his first public appearance in a ten-minute concert at 3:30, and have a half-hour performance after the conclusion of the game.
