Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA (April 21, 2005) – The Worcester Tornadoes announced today that the club will hold open tryouts for players on the weekend of Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1, at the baseball field at Quinsigamond Community College. The Saturday session is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday's should begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m.

The tryouts are open to all interested baseball players 18 years of age or older. No prior professional experience is required, but at least collegiate experience is certainly beneficial. Players must bring their own equipment to the tryouts. The fee for the tryout is $25 per player, with all players receiving a T-shirt for their participation.

"Worcester has been known as a baseball town since long before the Tornadoes arrived," said general manager Mike Lieberman. "This is an opportunity for talented local ballplayers to show manager Rich Gedman and the Tornadoes staff that they're ready to play at the professional level."

Since the Tornadoes are a brand new team building a roster for the first time, there is a greater opportunity for local players to make the team than there might be with an established club, Lieberman added.

Pitchers and catchers should report to the field at 8 a.m. on Saturday for check-in and be ready to take the field at 9 a.m. The session for pitchers should end by 11 a.m. Position players should report to the field at 10 a.m. on Saturday for registration and be prepared to play at 11 a.m. Tryouts for position players should take up the remainder of the Saturday session.

At the conclusion of tryouts on Saturday, the Tornadoes will invite a select number of participants to the Sunday session. Only invited players will be able to participate in the Sunday tryout session.

Players successful at the tryout may be offered a professional contract to play for Worcester this season. They will be joined by the remainder of the Tornadoes roster when training camp opens in mid-May.

The Tornadoes inaugural season opens on Saturday, May 28, when Worcester hosts the North Shore Spirit. The game will take place at Fitton Field on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross, where construction is currently underway to build a new 3,000-seat ballpark around the historic field.

Season tickets are currently on sale, with ticket packages being offered soon. Individual game tickets will go on sale in early May. Fans looking for more information can log on to the team's new web site at www.worcestertornadoes.com, or contact the team by phone at (508) 792-2288.
