North Shore Spirit News Release

Johanny Valera launched a two-run homerun in the top of the tenth inning to give Worcester the 6-4 victory over the Spirit in the series opener at the New Fraser Field on Monday night. The homerun was Valera's second of the game and ninth of the season.

Jarrett Sues took the loss for the Spirit (3-5) while Dave Byard earned the victory for the Tornadoes (5-3).

Worcester scored early in this one, picking up two runs in the first inning off of Mullis. Josh Beauregard led off the game with a double and scored on Omar Pena's groundout to shortstop. After Mullis retired the next batter, Valera followed with a solo homer to right field.

North Shore tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of some shaky plays from the Tornadoes. Rob Fischer reached on an error and went from first to third on a single from Vic Davilla. He scored on a wild pitch to put North Shore on the board. Davilla came across with the Spirit's second run on a sacrifice fly from Brian Lentz.

Worcester quickly regained the lead with a two-run second inning. With two outs in the inning, Lucas Taylor singled and reached second on a throwing error before scoring on a double from Beauregard. Beauregard scored the fourth Tornadoes run on an RBI single from Zach Strong.

Mullis lasted just 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Joey Siak, successful in his Fraser Field Debut. Siak pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball to keep the Spirit in the game.

Both teams cooled later in the game, with neither team able to get anything going on offense.

North Shore finally got another run on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Lentz walked with one out and scored on a groundout from Marcos Agramonte with the help of a throwing error from the Tornadoes shortstop.

The Spirit tied things up in the bottom of the ninth, when Davilla's RBI double scored Fischer. North Shore had a good chance to win the game with the bases loaded and one out, but they couldn't get the game-winning run across.

They'll get another chance tomorrow night when these two teams meet in the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. at the New Fraser Field.
