Cutter, Jackal named players of the week
July 25, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
SportsTicker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, has named New Haven County OF Derrick Gibson and New Jersey RHP Joel Bennett Batter and Pitcher of the week, respectively, for the week of July 18-24. This is the second consecutive week that members of the Cutters and Jackals have been named Players of the Week; last week, New Jersey INF Ricardo Cordova and New Haven County RHP Jarrett Stawarz garnered the honors.
Gibson went 8-for-14 with a double, a home run and nine RBI on the week, good for an .857 slugging percentage. The Winter Haven, Fla., native had a massive night on Friday in the Cutters' 15-7 victory over Quebec, going 4-for-5 and tying a league record with seven RBI. Gibson is currently fourth in the league with a .357 average, second with a .451 on-base percentage, and fifth with a .600 slugging percentage.
Currently in his thirteenth season of professional baseball, the thirty-year-old was a 13th-round draft pick of Colorado in the 1993 draft and spent seven seasons in the Rockies organization, leading the South Atlantic League with 32 home runs and 115 RBI for Ashville in 1995; he was also named one of the league's three all-star outfielders, along with Macon's Andruw Jones and Albany's Vladimir Guerrero. Gibson registered 49 at-bats in the majors in 1998 and 1999, hitting .286 with two home runs and eight RBI. He has also spent time in the Florida, Arizona and Anaheim organizations, as well as the Northern and Atlantic Leagues, leading the Atlantic League with 89 RBI for Long Island in 2003. This is his first season with New Haven County.
Bennett was superb on Saturday vs. North Shore, twirling a five-hit shutout and striking out seven, to improve his record to 5-1. Tied for fourth in the Can-Am League in wins, Bennett, 35, has a 2.50 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched.
Now in his fifteenth professional season, the former Oriole and Phillie was drafted in the 21st round out of East Stroudsburg University by Boston in 1991. After spending six seasons in the Red Sox organization, he spent part of 1996 with Newburgh of the Northeast League, and was then signed by Baltimore. The Binghamton, N.Y., native spent parts of the next six seasons with the Orioles, Phillies and Red Sox organizations, including seven games in the major leagues, before joining the Jackals in 2001. Since then, he has registered a 43-13 record in 70 outings with New Jersey.
