Brockton Rox News Release
July 25, 2005 - Brockton (7-1) kept pace with Quebec atop the Can-Am League's North Division with an 8-4 defeat of host Elmira (4-4) on Monday night at Dunn Field.
Mike Henry stifled the Pioneers offense for 5.2 innings and Manny Tejada picked up his first save with 3.1 hitless innings in relief, as the Rox won their fourth straight game. It was Brockton's seventh win in nine meetings with Elmira in 2005.
Leadoff hitter Matt Cucurullo set the immediate tone for the game, cracking his second home run of the season on Pioneer starter Glen Keeton's third pitch of the ball game. The Rox offense kept the pressure on, as Eugene Julien drew a walk, stole second base, went to third on a Craig Lewis single, and scored on Brian Jones' base hit. That single moved Lewis to third, allowing the Rox to attempt a suicide squeeze with Kris Zacuto at bat. Keeton's offering to the plate sizzled wildly past both Zacuto and catcher Onix Mercado, and Lewis scored easily for a 3-0 lead.
After Elmira tallied in the bottom of the second, Brockton put the game away. First, it was Jake Daubert doubling home Lewis and Jones in the third. In the fourth, it was Lewis' turn, sending Cucurullo and Guye Senjem around the bases with his own two-run double.
The Pioneers made matters interesting in the sixth, knocking out Henry with a pair of one-out singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. In came Tejada, but things didn't start so auspiciously for the right-hander. He walked ninth-place hitter Ryan Dorsey to load the bases, and then balked home Mercado from third.
From there, ten Pioneers hitters came to the plate against Manny Tejada. Each one was retired, including strikeouts of Dorsey and Jason Tuttle to end the game.
Henry (4-2) earned his second straight win for the Rox, while Keeton (3-3) lost his third consecutive decision.
The two teams play the second game in their three-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Dennis Boyd (2-3, 4.69) goes to the mound for Brockton against Elmira righthander Michael Howell (4-5, 5.31).
