Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Worcester Tornadoes exploded for a season high 11 runs and came from behind twice to defeat the Quebec Capitales 11-8 in Game One of Tuesday's split-admission doubleheader at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Johnny Welch blasted two home runs, including the game winner in the eight inning to break out of a mini-slump. The Tornadoes third baseman bashed homers in consecutive at bats to the deepest part of the park, with both balls easily clearing the fence.

First baseman Nick Salotti added an insurance 2-run home run in the eight and a two-run, two-out single in the the third. Salotti's four RBI were his most of the season and the second-most RBI for any Tornado this year.

Mike Mullen earned the victory pitching a season-high two and-a-third innings, while allowing two earned runs. Quebec jumped off to a quick start in the top of the first for the third consecutive game. Sebastien Boucher singled to plate Josh Colafemina and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch from Tornadoes starter Mike Gedman.

The Tornadoes left the bases loaded in the first and went down in order in the second but broke out in a big way in the third inning. Cameron Monger, Brandon Pinckney and Jerod Edmondson led off the inning with back-to-back singles to make it 3-1. All three Tornadoes and Welch scored twice for Worcester in the win. With two outs in the inning, Salotti crushed a grounder down the third base line for a two-RBI single, that gave the Tornadoes their first lead of the game at 3-2.

But the Capitales would respond with three two-out runs of their own in next half inning to grab the lead right back. Shortstop Jonathan Malo crushed a two-run, two-out RBI double to make it 4-3 and Boucher drove in Malo with a single to end the fourth at 5-4.

Neither team would score in the fifth as Gedman and Quebec starter Guillaume Leduc gave their managers strong outings. Both starters pitched into the sixth allowing six runs but couldn't get out of the inning.

Gedman retired two of the first three batters in the sixth but he couldn't retire Malo. The two battled over the course of 13 pitches, including five straight foul balls at 1-2, before Malo lined a triple over Monger's head to score Seth Boyd to make it 6-3.

Worcester responded in a huge way in the bottom half of the sixth with a five-run inning spurred by three consecutive extra-base hits. J.B. Brown and Cam Monger reached to lead off the inning against Leduc to end his outing. Pinckney and Edmondson followed with RBI doubles and Welch crushed the first of his two home runs to make it 8-6. The five-runs scored in the inning tied the most the Tornadoes have scored in a single inning all year.

Quebec tied it up with two runs in the seventh inning but Brendon Kelliher made sure that the game would stay tied. With runners on second and third and two outs, Josh Colafemina hit a short fly ball to left field that Kelliher came running in on and made a diving, face-first catch to keep the score tied at 8.

The Tornadoes took the lead for good in the eight when Welch crushed the third pitch he saw from Guillaume Duguay over the center field fence. After Alex Trezza walked to extend his seven-game on-base streak, Salotti crushed a pitch to almost the exact same spot to make it 11-8. Duguay took the loss for Quebec allowing three earned in one inning.

Matt McDonald came in and retired Quebec in order to earn his third save of the season.

Worcester and Quebec will play Game 4 of six this week Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. The Tornadoes will start former UMass pitcher Mike Dicato in his first appearance with the Tornadoes.
