Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Quebec jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held the Tornadoes at bay for the rest of the way as the Capitales earned the split of the doubleheader with the Tornadoes with a 6-3 win at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

The Tornadoes newest player Mike Dicato made his first professional start for the Tornadoes. The right-hander worked in and out of trouble over seven strong innings, giving up four earned runs on 11 hits. Dicato stranded nine Capitales runners over the course of his seven innings, including two runners on in the first inning.

John Mariotti and TJ Stanton allowed just three runs and seven hits in the nine-inning contest, holding the Tornadoes offense in check after Worcester scored a season-high 11 runs in Game One of the day. Mariotti (3-1) earned his fourth win in four starts against Worcester allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits. Stanton picked up his third save of the year, allowing no base runners over two innings.

Worcester third baseman Johnny Welch belted his third home run of the day over the center field fence to account for two of the Tornadoes three runs. Welch scored a second time on a Cameron Monger RBI groundout and Nick Salotti finished 1-4 with a run scored.

Dicato's start was rocky early as the first three Quebec batters reached on a walk, error and sharp single. But the former UMass pitcher induced a groundball double play and Jerod Edmondson made a terrific sliding catch in the left-center field gap with two outs and runners on second and third.

Steve Brown greeted Dicato with a laser, line-drive home run to left field to begin the second but that wold be it for either team until the fourth.

Quebec scored two, two-out runs in the top of the fourth on four straight two-out hits. Lefties Josh Colafemina and Jeff Helps swatted RBI singles to boost the Capitales lead to 3-0. But Worcester quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning.

After Jose Canseco was erased on a double play ball, Salotti flared a single into right field to bring Welch to the plate. The tall third baseman crushed his third home run of the day and team-high seventh of the year to cut the deficit to a single run.

Quebec answered with a run in the next inning though to make it a 4-2 game. With one out and two runners on, Patrick D'Aoust lined a single through the left-side of the infield to bring Peley across the plate. The Capitales added two runs in the eight inning off Michael Bourdon to make it 6-3.

And even though Worcester put the first two runners on in the eight inning, Worcester only put one run across in the inning. After Tony Patane put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Welch to third and Brendon Kelliher to second with one out, Monger grounded out to score Welch and Brandon Pinckney popped out with Kelliher on second.

Stanton shut the Tornadoes down in the ninth in the order, as Worcester's streak of not winning both ends of a doubleheader extended to 13.

The Tornadoes and Capitales will take the field for a fifth time in three days Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Former Capitales pitcher Dan Sausville will start for Worcester against Jeff Duda.
