Game Notes: The Tornadoes send 6'2" lefty Zach Zuercher to the mound for his 8th start of the season. He picked up his first win of the season his last time out against Pittsfield on August 4th, going six innings while giving up five hits and three earned runs. He also struck out a season high six batters, bringing his season total to 24. The five hits he allowed tied him for his season low and he has given up 52 in 42 innings pitched. Despite the face that he is 1-2, Worcester has a winning record of 4-3 when Zuercher takes the hill including 1-0 when he faced the Jackals on July 19th. In that start, he went six innings giving up 10 hits and allowing six earned runs. Three of those runs came on a Jabe Bergeron homerun in a five run Jackals third inning. Opposing Zuercher will be another lefty, Jackals' pitching coach Isaac Pavlik. The 5'11" New Jersey native will make his 20th appearance and 10th start of the season. His best start of the season came back on July 27th at Sussex, pitching a complete game shutout. He gave up just five hits and no walks while striking out seven Skyhawks. However, he did not fare as well in his latest start which also came at Sussex, where he lasted just three innings, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs in a 7-4 loss on August 3rd. Pavlik has 2 relief appearances against the Tornadoes this season, amounting to one and a third innings with three hits given up and four strikeouts. On the season, Pavlik has walked just 14 total batters while striking out 48 and has given up 69 hits in 62 1/3 innings pitched.
Last Night: Worcester was able to come back from an early 2-0 whole and withstand a New Jersey comeback by scoring two runs in the bottom of the 8th to win 7-5, giving them sole possession of third place in the second half standings at 10-9. Starter Chris Farley battled through five innings of work, giving up only two earned runs in the game. Rick Asadoorian picked up the save in the 9th for his 3rd of the season. Worcester pulled ahead 5-2 after two innings thanks to two, two run homeruns from Chris Colabello and Danny Santiesteban and a sac fly from Colabello. Farley and Jackals' starter Justin Jones finished the rest of their outings unscathed and handed the game over to the bullpen. New Jersey would get one run off of Matt McDonald in the 6th and then two off of Albert Ayala in the eighth thanks to Adam Godwin's second homerun of the night. Then in the bottom of the 8th, Stantrel Smith knocked in Alex Trezza with a double down the left field line to give the Tornadoes a one run lead and then scored on an error by catcher Angel Flores to get to the final score.
