Worcester Tornadoes News Release
AUGUSTA, NJ--- The Worcester Tornadoes turned in twenty hits on this afternoon, a new game high, and out slugged Sussex 12-6.
After Vinny Pennell scored to lead off the ball game for Worcester, the Tornadoes took a 1-0 lead into the second inning. That is where the game went south for the SkyHawks. Sussex committed four miscues in the top of the second inning and the black and orange capitalized plating five runs, only one earned, making their lead 6-0. Nick Salotti, who colleted four hits on the day, began the third with the strangest infield hit one will ever see. The baseball two hopped up and into third baseman Jeremy Hunt's shirt. The final run of the eight run barrage came on Carlos Sosa's eighth homerun of the season; a solo line-drive blast over the right field fence.
Starter Jusef Frias (2-2) stumbled slightly in the fifth with the score at 8-2. Frias allowed three hits and a walk to lead off the inning before handing the ball to Chris Anderson. Anderson allowed the inherited runners to score, but got three outs in the first of two relief innings to end the frame. Ryan Pellegrine also tossed a pair scoreless, including his first Tornado strikeout, in the effort.
Justin Knoff's record evens at 4-4 with the loss; he surrendered eight runs, three earned over five innings. Jamie Douglas pitched two innings of relief and gave up four more runs. Douglas Lane finished off the contest for Sussex and was the only SkyHawk pitcher to finish the day with a lover ERA than when he began.
Worcester will take the day off Monday before returning to action with Zack Zuercher (3-4) on the bump against the American Defenders of New Hampshire. Tuesday July 28th is Wachusett Region night; half price tickets if you live or work in a town in that area.
