Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Sometimes when teams go on three game losing streaks, they turn to their lead off hitter for a spark. Saturday was a case study of that scenario, as Tornadoes lead off man Cameron Monger crossed the plate three times to score nearly half of the Tornadoes seven runs in the game.
Monger ended the game going 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs and two stolen bases. His production at the top helped the Tornadoes break a three game skid, beating the Rockland Boulders 7-2.
Kevin Cooper collected his first win of 2012 once the Tornadoes took the lead in the sixth inning on Monger's second run of the game. Cooper lasted six innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits, striking out four.
Cooper's counterpart, Rockland's Jonathan Velasquez, got tagged with the loss, giving up four earned runs on eight hits, including two home runs. He struck out seven in his five and a third innings pitched, as the Boulders pitching staff ended the night with 15 strikeouts.
Keith Brachold once again had the game's first RBI; he hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field that scored Rockland lead off man Chris Valencia from second base. Center fielder Jerod Edmondson was shook up on the play, but stayed in the game in center field.
The Tornadoes got the run back in the third inning. Cameron Monger singled and stole second, which set up an RBI single from Brandon Pinckney. Pinckney is now second on the Tornadoes with 12 RBI on the season.
The Worcester franchise then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, countering RBI single by Cole Kraft in the top of the frame. Jerod Edmondson crushed a deep fly ball over the right field fence to record his third two-run home run in four games. Cameron Monger scored from first as the Tornadoes gave Kevin Cooper a 3-2 lead.
The Tornadoes line-up almost batted around in the bottom of the sixth, as Nick Salotti was the only one not to make it to the dish. Brandon Kelliher smacked his first home run over the left-center wall to score Chris Torres as well.
Then, after Cameron Monger and Jerod Edmondson walked, a double steal put both base runners in scoring position, as the batter Johnny Welch hit an infield single to allow Cameron Monger to cross home plate for his third time. A passed ball allowed Jerod Edmondson to score is second run off the game after Rockland catcher Orlando Marcado could not handle a pitch from his battery mate, Garrett Johnson, putting up the Tornadoes for good 7-2.
Michael Bourdon and Nick Serino combined for three scoreless innings, as the Tornadoes went on the win their eighth game of the 2012 season. Rockland fell to 9-12, and snaps a five-game winning streak.
